Is your website displaying the text “Just another WordPress site” in the header or title bar?
Many beginners struggle with changing this tagline, as leaving it as is can give an unprofessional impression. Fortunately, it’s a simple task to modify or remove this text altogether.
In this tutorial, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to easily change the “Just another WordPress site” text.
What is the Purpose of a WordPress Site’s Tagline?
A tagline serves as a slogan or description for a WordPress site. It is a concise phrase used by many websites to convey the purpose or branding of the site.
In earlier versions of WordPress, specifically before version 6.1, the default tagline for a newly created website was “Just another WordPress site.”
However, starting from version 6.1, WordPress no longer populates the tagline field with any default text for new installations.
Nevertheless, users who created their websites prior to that or using earlier versions may still have the “Just another WordPress site” tagline saved in their WordPress settings.
While not all WordPress themes display the tagline, many do provide an option to showcase it.
Even if your chosen theme doesn’t visibly display the tagline to users, it is highly recommended to customize this default text. Changing the tagline is one of the essential tasks to perform after installing WordPress.
For instance, on WPBeginner, our tagline is “Beginner’s Guide for WordPress,” which can be seen just below our navigation menu and is also reflected in our site’s title tag in the browser.
Having a tagline for your website is not mandatory. If your website’s domain name or title already clearly communicates its main topic or mission, you may choose to omit a tagline.
However, if your domain name is not directly associated with your blogging niche, adding a catchy and descriptive tagline can help visitors understand the purpose and focus of your website.
How to Change Your Tagline in WordPress’s Settings
One of the easiest ways to modify the default “Just another WordPress site” tagline is by accessing the settings of your WordPress website.
To begin, navigate to your WordPress dashboard. Typically, you can do this by appending “/wp-admin” to your website’s domain name.
For example, if your site is named example.com, your WordPress dashboard can be accessed at example.com/wp-admin.
If you are not already logged in, WordPress will prompt you to log in.
Once logged in, proceed to “Settings » General” in your dashboard, where you will find the Tagline field.
Within the Tagline field, you have the option to change the existing tagline or remove it entirely by leaving the box empty.
Removing the tagline will eliminate the tagline text from your website.
Please note that after deleting the text, WordPress may still display “Just another WordPress site” as a placeholder. This placeholder text is only a suggestion and will not be saved when you click on the “Save Changes” button.
If you prefer to use your own tagline, consider the following tips to create a catchy and informative one:
- Incorporate the main topic or theme of your website into the tagline.
- Keep the tagline concise and straightforward.
- Avoid excessive use of keywords or special characters, as search engines may view it as poor practice and potentially penalize your website.
For instance, if you operate a travel blog, a tagline such as “Travel Tips and Hacks for Solo Travelers” would be effective.
Once you have made the desired changes, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the “Save Changes” button.
